How to teach Grandparents to use computers!

I’ve always wanted to teach my grandparents how to use computers. Computers are a big part of my life, but so are my grandparents. My grandma has been going through a bout of depression and I read in this article that doing something like this might help. Besides, I love spending time with my grandparents. They are hilarious.

Nevertheless, my grandparents have never touched a computer, let alone used one, so I don’t expect this to be an easy task!

I will divide the daunting task in the following manageable chunks:

  1. Hardware. My grandparents are terribly afraid of computers. I figure that the best way to overcome that fear is to give them a basic lecture of the hardware. I will attempt to familiarize them with all the buttons on the computer, and then make them turn on and turn off the computer.
  2. Software. Talk to them about what an Operating System is and how it is just a Desktop metaphor. Explain to them where to find stuff on the computer and how to get help if needed.
  3. Internet. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: in this modern age, a computer without Internet is useless. Therefore, it is very important that I explain to them what the Internet is, how it works, and how to use it. I will guide them through creating a Google account for Gmail, a Hotmail account for them to instant message, helping them create a Facebook account, teach them how to Google, show them how to download music, and introduce them to Youtube!

Choosing an Operating System for them was a difficult choice, but I decided to go with Linux Mint 8 because its very aesthetically pleasing and in my opinion its the best Linux distro for Linux adoption. As for the browser, I will use Google Chrome because it uses less memory and the computer I’ll be teaching them will be a netbook, but also because if one tab crashes, it won’t crash the entire browser. If the entire browser crashes on my grandma, she will freak out and stop using the computer and we don’t want that! :D

I’m really sad that I can’t teach them in a bigger computer, but this is the only computer I can spare. Besides, it’s a really nice netbook (ASUS N10j). It’s almost as stylish as Linux Mint 8 and it carries a nice video card and awesome battery life.

If the mission is a success, I will report back with details. Wish me luck and cheer me on! Haha.
